East Gymnasium

East Gymnasium located by the Magnesia Gate which was one of the three monumental gates of ancient city of Ephesus and was built in 2nd century AD. A lecture hall and a palaestra were at the entrance of the building. The archaeologist found some statues of gods during the excavations such as Asclepius, Aphrodite, Dionysus, Hygeia, Pan which were used as indoor decorations. For the purpose of educating young Ephesians on sports, musics, astronomy and strolling the vaulted halls were used in the centre of the structure. As there were many young girl statues found in the gymnasium the structure is also called as “Girls’ Gymnasium”. These statues are now exhibited at the Izmir Archaeology Museum.
